The ride will depart from Carlingford Marina, which is where the Carlingford Lough Greenway starts. Your bike will be safety checked before commencing and any feasible adjustments made (tyres pumped, brake adjustments etc).
Heading out of the Marina, the first 4km+ are straight and almost flat, running along the trackbed of the Dundalk, Newry and Greenore Railway. We'll encounter three cattle grids with gates along this stretch.
As we pass Greer's Quay, we'll encounter a number of bends as we snake around the now derelict Tain Holiday Village and then along the shoreline at St Jude's Shrine.
After 5km or so, the Greenway uses the road for 300 metres. There is traffic calming in place and clearly marked directions to cross the road. We then spin along the shoreline lane to Omeath.
We'll be stopping for refreshments in Omeath, probably for half an hour, having allowed 45 minutes to ride the 7km to Omeath and then 45 minutes to ride back at a leisurely pace of around 10kmph.
This ride is ideal for beginners! If you don't own a bike, a local bike hire company based at Carlingford Marina will rent one at 50% off standard rates. Call to arrange.

I live in Carlingford and enjoy spins around the Cooley Mountains and Peninsula plus further afield. My wife and I run ‘OnYerBike’, a bike hire business on the Carlingford Lough Greenway. My biggest achievement in cycling was completing the Prudential Ride London 100 mile event in 2019 – a big challenge involving lots of training - but I prefer much shorter rides that always involve some coffee and cake!
Great to spend a couple of hours on the Carlingford Lough Greenway with two such lovely ladies ! Enjoyed leading my first AXA bike ride and looking forward to many more
