This is a nice flat route, with mainly left turns. Setting off from Applegreen we head out the Monasterevin Road, and cycle through Kilberry for approximately 5km. We will then take the left turn onto the Vicarstown Road after Cloney bridge which is a nice, quiet road.
We cross over the River Barrow on our way to Vicarstown where we will follow the canal towpath back towards Athy. Care will have to be taken along the 6km towpath as it is quite narrow, and we will be sharing the road with both pedestrians and motor vehicles. We have the right of way at the end of the towpath but you will need to be cautious of traffic approaching from the right.
After a further one or two kilometres we take the next left turn. This road leads us back up to the main Athy to Monasterevin Road at Burt Cross. We filter to the right lane on approach to the junction and come to a complete stop at this junction. Here we take the right turn leading us back into Athy and a welcome cuppa!
I am an enthusiastic leisure cyclist who loves getting out in the fresh air and exploring the countryside on my bike. I would like to encourage cyclists of all abilities to join me on a social spin where nobody gets left behind.
