Description

This trip is a “figure of 8” loop around Clarinbridge. Starting from the school in Clarinbridge we will cycle through the village turning right at the water tower towards Athenry.  We will pass through Casey's Cross and turn left towards Oranmore at the Green Briar.  We will then cycle to the roundabout at Oranmore, turning left to take us back to Clarinbridge stopping off at Goat Lane cafe for coffee and cake.

After the coffee break, we will continue through Clarinbridge and on to Kilcolgan where we will turn left towards Killeeneen.  About 2km down this road we will again turn left and cross the Dunkellin river.  After another couple of km, we will turn left to bring us through Kilcornan and back to Clarinbridge for a total distance of about 29km.

About

I've been cycling for over 20 years both individually and as part of a cycling club. I've really enjoyed cycling in a group, both the exercise and the social side. I'd like to help others in the locality to get out on their bikes and get that enjoyment as well. Nothing too strenuous and guaranteed to include some decent coffee stops along the way!

As Van Morrison says - when it's not always raining, there'll be days like this!

An absolutely glorious morning for our first Clarinbridge AXA spin since pre-Covid times.  We headed off on our figure of 8 loop from Clarinbridge school taking in the former Green Briar and Oranmore before returning to Clarinbridge for a coffee stop at Goat's Lane Cafe.  In light of Covid19, they have recently added an outdoor courtyard and we had a very pleasant stop there with tea, coffee, delicious scones and good conversation.

After the stop we took off again for the second loop in our figure of 8 spin turning left at Kilcolgan.  The plan was to turn left again and go across the recently restored Dunkellin bridge.  Maybe it was the sunshine, or maybe it was the good conversation, but the absent-minded bike ride leader missed the turn and before we knew it we were passing by Rahasane turlough and nearly in Craughwell.  However, once we realised where we were, we turned left, bringing us back in through Kilcornan and back to our starting point to finish the journey.  We ended up adding about 7km to the journey but our group appeared quite happy with the extra distance, given the lovely day that was in it.

Stats for the trip:

  • Distance:37.25km
  • Average Speed: 22km/hr
  • Cycling duration: 1 hour 40 mins
  • Total duration (including coffee stop): 2 hours
