On exiting Fota Retail and Business Park on Cobh Cross, we turn left onto a roundabout and take the first exit to Carrigtwohill. We continue into IDA where a freshly constructed cycle path takes us north onto a crossroads where we turn left. We stay on this quiet road for 2km before turning left at AOC Commercials (Springhill Business Park) onto a straight road for 1km. From here, we go over a railway bridge onto the old N25 crossroads, where we turn right heading for Cork. We continue for 700m until we meet the beginning of the greenway by the Elm Tree Bar and Restaurant. We then cycle to Glounthaune. On reaching Glounthaune, we cross onto the main road, joining traffic up to Little Island. We will pass The Island Gate Bar and Restaurant on our right and a petrol station to our left. We continue straight onto North Esk where we encounter two roundabouts. We take the second exit on both and cycle under a motorway bridge up a slight hill for 300m where we then turn left onto the greenway to Dunkettle House (entrance gate near the main Dunkettle roundabout). Turning around, we retrace our steps, going back down under the motorway bridge again to Little Island where we stop for a coffee at Ali's Restaurant and Supermarket, where outdoor sitting is plentiful. We then make our way back to Fota Retail and Business Park.

I’m an enthusiastic leisure cyclist keen to see more people cycling in my area. I have a new found love of cycling greenways and now roads thanks to being a past participant of AXA Community Bike Rides near and far.

Nice morning for this cycle and quite manageable for all. This route will improve in time with the completion of the second and final stage at the start of next year. Nice pleasant coffee stop at the half way point on the return journey home with great outdoor seating.
