Description

We will meet at Circle K on the Dublin road for this cycle. We turn left out of the service station and take the first exit at the roundabout onto the Kilcullen road and continue for some 8 kms. This road is very busy traffic wise with a few steep drags along the way – the Moat of Ardscull probably being the worst of them.

At Fontstown cross we turn right towards Crookstown, onto a quieter but much hillier road. The steepest climb is about 2km in distance and starts at Ballyadams, bringing us up past Cuckolds cross to the top of the hill. It is worth every pedal stroke for the view you get of the lush, green pastures and Wicklow mountains in the distance; not to mention the joy of freewheeling down the hill and over the motorway bridge. It's almost coffee time!

We veer to the left over the narrow Crookstown Bridge (beware of oncoming traffic), then navigate several ramps outside the church and school before following the road around to the right and arriving at Crookstown Service Station.

After our break we retrace our steps out over Crookstown Bridge, this time taking a left at the junction towards Ballitore. Our last climb comes after Ballitore on the approach to the motorway bridge, but again you are rewarded with views of spectacular countryside as you freewheel down to the junction with the Athy Link Road.

We take care crossing the link road and head towards Athy for the last 8km of our cycle - back on the flat, open road with only the wind to contend with.
