Ready to step it up? This ride would be ideal for those of you who are already managing 30/40km spins, but now with an added challenge, Howth Head…
We will meet at the front of the Frye Model Railway Museum, cutting through Malahide Castle (shared use trails), onto the back road through Kinsealy Lane, then Chapel Lane to Portmarnock raceway, railway then greenway. Rejoining the road, passing St Peter & Paul's Church Baldoyle. Careful at the level crossing past The Elphin, then left at the seafront, towards Sutton Cross and right, to begin our climb up Howth Head.
I will always remember the first time I made it up to 'the summit' on me auld hybrid, the scores of racers who lapped and left me for dust, but were they enjoying themselves? Did they stop to smell the roses, take in the views and taste the ice cream? Well, maybe… but what a lovely feeling of accomplishment when I eventually got there, justly rewarded with a '99' and a stunning vista, 'til I got my breath back. It's not the Tour de France, we only go as fast as our slowest rider - which could very well be me! Some photos, then the best bit; the lovely, long descent down to Sutton Cross - slow and watch out for the speed ramps by the school (after the graveyard). After a refreshing mug o'tay and some chocolate biscuit cake (or whatever you're having yourself…) we will take the Strand road (another level crossing) to Baldoyle, back onto the greenway and then follow the coast road through Portmarnock, past High Rock, Robswall and back to Malahide.
Be sure to bring plenty of hydration, perhaps an energy bar or a pack of jelly babys- mmm… yum!
(3 to 4hrs max, allows for delays, choo choo trains, cafe etc.)

Cycling 5 years in Fingal & a few holidays across Europe - most recently the Moselle wine valley & Bavarian Brewery Bike tour! In 2018, I took up the Cycling Ireland #2828challenge which led me to joining a club and completing a handful of sportives over the last year. Still learning and still enjoying the leisurely aspect whilst sharing a common interest, with new friends, plenty of coffee, cake and ice-cream!
