Description

We meet in the car park on R741 (Old Dublin Road) at The Frying Irishman/Ballyelland Pottery in Castlebridge opposite Wexford Block. We cycle up the R741 for one km as far as Ballymartin Crossroads and turn left. After half a kilometre we reach a T junction and we turn right. We cycle straight for about 5kms as far as Ballybeg Little passing through Garrylough. When we reach Ballybeg, we take a left turn and continue for about 6kms as far as Ballymurn Village. At the church in the village we turn left and then after about one kilometre we pass Kilmallock Graveyard and Church on our right.

We continue as far as Garryvarren and at the cross we turn right for Oylegate which is a distance of about 8kms. The Sow River is on our left and there is a steep hill down to the bridge. We climb up from the river and continue to the village of Oylegate. When we reach Oylegate we meet traffic lights and, as this is the main N11, we need to take special care. We can get coffee in the shop or the filling station. We ride on for about 4kms as far as The Fox and Goose Cross where we turn left and continue into Crossabeg.

In Crossabeg we carry on straight for Castlebridge. This is a tricky crossroads and we do not have the right of way. Leaving Crossabeg, we come to a very scenic part of the road. We pass Ardtramon House on our left, and St Brigid's Well and a well preserved Norman Tower House on the right. St. Brigid's Well and the Tower House are easily accessible on foot from the road. From here we continue cycling to Castlebridge, enjoying magnificent views of the Slaney Estuary on our right hand side. After Edenvale Woods, we cross Poulsack Bridge for the final, ascent into Castlebridge.

About

I live in Castlebridge in Co. Wexford and I am a keen leisure cyclist. I try to get out as often as possible and enjoy cycling mostly within my own locality. I would love to see more people out on their bikes, taking advantage of all the health and social benefits that cycling has to offer.

Five AXA Participants enjoyed a great spin today in the sunshine and a good chat over a cuppa in Castlebridge once we completed the ride.
