Meeting point for this cycle is K Leisure, Athy. We take a right turn out of Greenhills and another right at the lough 750m down the road. We follow the canal towpath for approx. 10km until we reach Vicarstown. Here we take a left turn up over the bridge and follow the road around the bend to the right, then take the next left onto the Stradbally Road. That’s the easy bit done!
We cycle through some beautiful countryside on the way to Stradbally, which makes the 3.3km drag over the hill much more enjoyable than it would otherwise be. This marks the halfway point of our cycle and a welcome coffee and cake stop.
After coffee we continue down the street and take the left turn at the junction onto the Athy Road (Sorry no climbing the Windy Gap today!). I really love this stretch of road, we get a great view of the Kildare countryside with the Wicklow mountains in the background. It is mostly flat but it does have a few little drags along the way, nothing you can’t handle. After 13km we arrive back into Athy, having completed our 29km cycle. Well Done – Hope to see you again!
