Description

Get the weekend off on the right pedal, with this Friday evening spin, an enlarged leisurely loop of Swords!

We meet at Applegreen Mountgorry just off the Malahide - Swords Road. A quick shortcut through the industrial estate, before re-emerging at the Seatown Road (Woodies) roundabout. The third exit takes us north on the bypass, to Fingallians roundabout. Take the 2nd exit here, then after crossing the Broadmeadow River, we turn left into Ennis lane. Take it handy, single file, there's a few sharp bends, where you can't see what's coming round the corner, til we get to a T junction, where we turn right, passing Balheary GC. Left onto Windmill Lane then right at the church onto Balheary Avenue. A lovely long straight brings us to the crossroads at Roganstown GC. Straight through towards Rolestown, a staggered junction, right then left past the community centre and then a left down and up a short steep dip, back over the river. You've already done 10 kilometres, well done!

After a quick break at the village filling station we will continue out the Ashbourne Road before turning left towards Kilsallaghan and Surgalstown. There's a lot of tree cover here, so make sure your lights have been well charged and are flashing brightly. Nice quiet country lanes for the most part, but the road surface is badly broken here and there, so keep an eye out and your ears open for any warnings from those ahead.

We will skirt around St Margarets GC, pass the river Ward and then skip along Kilreesk Lane, at the back of Keelings fruit farms, bringing us out to the Naul Road briefly, then Forrest Road and yet another golf club! We're back in civilisation now, so a few pedestrian crossings and traffic lights to endure. Down past Ridgewood, right at SuperValu Boroimhe and straight through the Airside Retail Park, third exit at the roundabout towards Tesco. Left at this roundabout and follow the road around Holywell until we return to Mountgorry and our starting point.

It's not a race, but a longer less leisurely spin, so make sure you've had a bite to eat and/or bring a bite and some hydration with you. Dress well, but in layers, allowing for the cool evening air. Don't forget to stick a face mask in your pocket,  in case you want to grab something from the store.

About

Cycling 5 years in Fingal & a few holidays across Europe - most recently the Moselle wine valley & Bavarian Brewery Bike tour! In 2018, I took up the Cycling Ireland #2828challenge which led me to joining a club and completing a handful of sportives over the last year. Still learning and still enjoying the leisurely aspect whilst sharing a common interest, with new friends, plenty of coffee, cake and ice-cream!

a very low turnout -  I suspect everyone was out enjoying the fantastic evening, doing something with a little less exertion. That's what I'm going to do with the rest of it… Cheers!
