Description

This spin takes us down to the sea at Curracloe and follows part of Euro Velo Route 3. Our route comprises mostly of up and down country roads with a 5km long section on the main road at the end.

We start at the entrance to the car park on the R741 (Old Dublin Road) at The Frying Irishman/Ballyelland Pottery in Castlebridge opposite Wexford Block. Leaving the car park, we cross the road and cycle for about 1.5kms towards Wexford Town, as far as Fahey’s Cross, where we turn left. We cycle on this road for about 5.5kms as far as Curracloe village. At the Maxol Shop in the village we turn right, following the sign for White Gap. There is a sharp bend just after our turn at the old school, where visibility is poor, so take extra care here. As we continue along this road we approach the sea and we take the turn to the right for The Raven Point which we reach after about 2.5kms.

From The Raven, we cycle for around 2kms along the Euro Velo Route to Ballinesker Strand, passing Curracloe Strand along the way. All our cycling is on road. From Ballinesker we ride up a steep, but short hill, to the R742 where we turn left. The views of the sea on our left along this section of the ride are beautiful. After about 2.5kms we reach Hotel Curracloe where we will stop for coffee.

After the break we leave Curracloe and continue cycling for about 4kms as far as the R741. The first short section here is a steep incline, but we can take our time, dismount if necessary and regroup when we reach the top. We continue on this quiet road through rolling countryside to the village of Screen, and then to the R741 at Ballyfarnogue. Here we STOP and take a left turn. We cycle for 5kms along the main road down into the village of Castlebridge.

About

I live in Castlebridge in Co. Wexford and I am a keen leisure cyclist. I try to get out as often as possible and enjoy cycling mostly within my own locality. I would love to see more people out on their bikes, taking advantage of all the health and social benefits that cycling has to offer.

Everyone enjoyed a very pleasant spin to Curracloe Beach today with our coffee break at the Hotel in the village of Curracloe. The weather remained dry and we were back in Castlebridge around 12.30pm.
