Athy Blueway Loop 2

Applegreen, Monasterevin Road, Athy
Group size
8 Participants
All Bikes

Those of you who have come out with me before will be familiar with this route, it is very flat, with a nice stretch along the canal towpath.

We meet at the Applegreen garage on the Monasterevin road, then head out the main road for 8kms, passing through the village of Kilberry.  We take the left turn that is sign posted Vicarstown after crossing the narrow bridge at Cloney.

We continue on this road for a further 4.5kms, crossing over the River Barrow before arriving at the canal at Vicarstown where we take the road to the left down onto the canal towpath.

We get to enjoy the sights and sounds of the canal towpath for approx 6km. The towpath is quite narrow and you will meet pedestrians and other cyclists as well as motorists using the towpath so take care as you proceed along the canal.

At the end of the canal we will have the right of way but be sure to check that there is no oncoming traffic approaching from the right of us. We take a left at the next junction to cross the Barrow once more. This road filters into two lanes on approach to the junction with the Monasterevin road, so you will need to be in the right lane so you can make the right turn for Athy.

Now you are on the home stretch - only 3kms till coffee!
